Channeling Persephone: Spring's Rebirth

It's the New Moon in Aries and it's a powerhouse Moon with six planets in Aries; firepower indeed to kick off the Spring Equinox; so, set your intentions, bless them, then let them go.

Lately, a good friend (an astrologer) and I have been working with the Persephone archetype in various ways, but it wasn't until the other day, after setting up my Persephone altar that I was able to connect with Persephone deeply through channeling. Just in time for the first New Moon of Spring, but first I'd like to share with you the Persephone Myth and NOT the well known patriarchal version which you probably already know.

I do not like or resonate with the standard version of the Persephone myth; it's complicated, negative and depressing. I do resonate with the pre-patriarchal version of Her myth and would like to share it with you. This version was written by ecofeminist philosopher Charlene Spretnak and is based upon the classical scholarship of Jane Ellen Harrison, Louis Farnell, Sir Arthur Evans, and others.

The Myth of Persephone

Demeter and Persephone share the bountiful fields, enjoying the beautiful earth, and watching over the crops together. One day, Persephone asks her mother about the restless spirits of the dead she has seen hovering about their earthly homes. "Is there no one in the underworld to receive the newly dead?" she asks. Demeter explains that she rules over the underworld as well as the upper world, but her more important work is above ground, feeding the living.

Reflecting on the bewilderment and pain she has seen in the ghostly spirits, Persephone replies, "The dead need us, Mother. I will go to them." After trying to persuade Persephone to stay with her, Demeter relents: "Very well...We cannot give only to ourselves. I understand why you must go. Still, you are my daughter, and for every day you remain in the underworld, I will mourn your absence."

Persephone gathers three sheaves of wheat and three poppies, favorite flowers of Demeter, takes the torch that Demeter has prepared for her, and begins her descent down into a deep chasm into the underworld. After a long journey, she comes to a place where many spirits are milling about, moaning. She moves among them, and after preparing an altar, she beckons them to her, saying, "If you come to me, I will initiate you into your new world. You have waxed into the fullness of life, and waned into darkness; may you be renewed in peace and wisdom."

Meanwhile, Demeter has grown sorrowful, her bountiful energies draining from the earth, leaving it barren, with no crops growing to feed the humans. After some months, Persephone decides she will return to the upper world. As she approaches her mother, the flowers of the earth rise up in joyful song, and as Demeter and Persephone run to embrace each other, the birds and animals begin to sing, "Persephone returns, Persephone returns." And as the mother and daughter dance and dance, new growth springs up in the fields, and the humans join in the rejoicing.

Each time Persephone goes back down into the underworld, the mortals share with Demeter the bleak season of her daughter's absence; and as she rejoins her mother in the spring, they are renewed by the signs of Persephone's return.

Channeling Persephone ~ Rebirth

Today, in honour of the New Moon in Aries I created my usual New Moon Circle, and was surprised to find myself a wee bit down (considering all that Aries Firepower in the air), so I called upon Persephone in conjunction with the pulling of a Rune and asked for her help.

As Persephone and I fly above the earth, she says to me, "See, down there, there are scores of people  dying as they live, but we can't help them because  they are choosing life in death. And you, are you dying?"

Me: No, I'm not, I want to help!

Persephone: Then let's go on. "Print this, and you die," she says with a smile. "You see, dying isn't anything to fear; let it go...let it all go."

Me: But losing someone is.

Persephone: Come, let's continue. What do you see?

Me: I see people living, loving, planting, and dying, really dying.

Persephone: And yes, no cliches from me...I'll keep my mouth zipped. Let's fly on.

We stop and rest.

Persephone: What do you see when you see me?

Me: I see a woman, a goddess, of many-changing hues.

Persephone: Look again, what do you see?

Me: I see Me.

Then, all of a sudden I am She and so completely filled with bliss that my eyes fill up with tears.

Me: "How can I serve?" And I answer my own question: I can paint, with joy and abandon and love and passion and anger and rage and fury; the world. I can share my words and visions, and heal and commiserate and burn with Divine Bliss;

The fire, the water, the air, the earth,

And bless all (that is and is not) for I am reborn.

Snake-Charmer (Chinese Year of the Snake)

Kathy Crabbe, Snake Charmer, 2013, ink, pastel & gouache on paper, 5 x 7”.The Year of the Snake begins on the new Moon of February 9, 2013.* The snake is a universal symbol of healing and rebirth. The Chinese Serpent Goddess, Nu Kua, formed the first people using yellow clay from the banks of the Yellow River. Because of Serpent's wisdom, Serpent year is a time of introspection, planning, and seeking answers.

If you were born in a Snake year (2012, 2001, 1989, 1977, 1965, 1953, 1941, 1929, 1917, 1905) you are extremely determined and strive for success. You accomplish goals through careful planning and calculations, like a coiled Serpent waiting for the exact time to strike. You will follow your desires regardless of circumstances. You are also enchanting, creative, spiritual, attractive, and talented. A Snake can be very sociable when she wants to be, but can appear cool and aloof at times; she won't reveal her thoughts to just anyone.

Enter Goddess No. 1 or How to dream a new reality

Kathy Crabbe, Goddess No. 1, 2012, acrylic, charcoal & pastel on canvas, 48 x 48” I can feel a new series of paintings coming on and as usual, the idea came to me at a low point when I needed it the most. After a very dark conversation with a good friend I penned an equally dark blog post, then after 24 hours I realized that it didn't even sound like me so I nixed it and began to go deeper.

As I sat and stared at my current painting in progress I asked for a vision and then I meditated. Next, I found myself in a swirling, milky green crystal where I encountered a fire spirit and so I dallied a while and when I came to I had the idea for a new series to be called: The Lost Goddess Series and of course my last painting (see below) just had to Goddess No. 1

Connecting with the fire spirit reminded me of all the work I've done in the psychic realms and as a Creative Soul Guide and teacher of the eClass, Awaken Your Divine Feminine Soul and it made me wonder why I had not brought these 2 realms together in my new work. And when I asked that question, POOF everything fell into place and it made sense why this last painting had a female face within it.

I am hoping to commune further with this Goddess to see if she will tell me her name and what kind of magical qualities she has, so stay tuned!

My Facebook friends suggested these names for her: Egyptian Pagan Alien Samurai TimePiece Silent Dancer Horns of the Moon Torn Coatlicue Gently Rising Inner Currents Trip to the dentist

Notes from The Seth Material

Subjectively speaking, you are everywhere surrounded by your own greater reality, but you do not look in the right places. You have been taught not to trust your feelings, your dreams, or your imagination precisely because these do not fit the accepted reality of facts.

They are the creator of facts, however. In no way do I mean to demean the intellect. It is here, however, that the tyranny of the fact world holds greatest sway. The intellect has been denied its wings. Its field of activity has been limited because you have given it only facts to go on.

Each event of your life is contained within each other event. In the same way, each lifetime is contained in each other lifetime. The feeling of reality is "truer" then in the dream state. You can become consciously aware of your own dreaming. You can also allow your "dream self" greater expression in the waking state. This can be done through techniques that are largely connected with creativity.

Creativity connects waking and dreaming reality, and is in itself a threshold in which the waking and dreaming selves merge to form constructs that belong equally to each reality. You cannot begin to understand how you form the physcial events of your lives unless you understand the connection between creativity, dreams, play, and those events that form your waking hours. In one respect dreams are a kind of structured unconsious play. Your mind dreams in joyful pleasure at using itself, freed from the concerns of practical living. Dreams are the minds' free play. The spontaneous activity, however, is at the same time training in the art of forming practical events.

Conversations with the Goddess by Guest Author, Dorothy Atalla

Conversations with the Goddess by Dorothy AtallaI recently reviewed Dorothy Atalla's new book, Conversations with the Goddess - Encounter at Petra, Place of Power and my favorite part was her exciting discovery that through deep meditation she was able to access images, information and eventually a feminine Presence who identified herself as the Goddess along with ancient people associated with the sacred city of Petra. Dorothy's background is in academia so during these meditations her mental mind was saying, "You don't have solid research to back up these insights" and so she remedies this concern through solid research, reading and questioning of the Presence based upon a chapter by chapter discussion of two books: The Great Mother by Erich Neumann and Up From Eden by Ken Wilber.

"When men and women stand on the High Place in the age to come, the only sacrifice will be themselves, that is to say, the boundaries of the small self will dissolve to merge with the All."

Spotlight on Author, Dorothy 'Chickee' Atalla

In the ancient world the Divine Feminine, or Goddess, was often portrayed in three aspects: maiden, mother, and old woman.

We live in a very different world today, but it is worth looking at these three aspects because they are still important stages in a woman’s life -- even though they don't encompass all that a modern woman is. Moving from one stage to another marks a significant and irreversible natural shift in our bodies and our female being.

Now you might be thinking, This all sounds like the old maxim, “Biology is destiny,” and who wants to be defined by that anymore? Well, yes, it does sound that way – unless you also consider these three stages as spiritual shifts in our lives.

What might the spiritual nature of each phase of the Goddess have been like?

We can imagine something of this from looking at Minoan civilization, dating from about 3,000 to 1400 B.C. The Minoans lived on the island of Crete in the Mediterranean sea.

Abundant archaeological evidence exists for this society’s reverence of a Goddess. Murals found at Knossos, a town in Crete, show plant life in exuberant growth around the central image of a female deity. Animals and humans are depicted as part of this abundance. These paintings reveal reverence for the generative powers of Earth.

What do you think a society with reverence of the Divine Feminine might have looked like?

Women's rising awareness will shatter the present social molds as women turn within to find the energies uniquely theirs, in coming into touch with them, they will become empowered. This will set up an irresistible force which will alter society as it exists now...Women will be central in creating large scale communal values; they have been long engaged in creation and maintenance of relationship and communal living on a small scale within families.

Women's Spirituality Author: Dorothy chickee AtallaMore About Dorothy

On a  January day in the depths of mid-western winter Dorothy (Chickee to her friends) Atalla expected more of the same: snow , ice and gray skies.   But when she lay down on her living room carpet to relax with music, she had an experience which changed her life.  Inexplicably, a vision of a radiant and beneficent female presence appeared to her.  This astonishing event was only the beginning of a journey she could never have imagined.  Nor did she then realize that her vision had any connection with a trip she had made to Petra, a site in the country of Jordan.  That vision foreshadowed  the dialogue with deity  which is the essence of her new book, Conversations with the Goddess: Encounter at Petra, Place of Power.

Conversations with the Goddess swiftly evolves  from personal story into a universal story in which a feminine Presence speaks about  the role of the sacred Feminine in the future.  She also speaks of the past, revealing a panoramic view of a time in which the Goddess was revered not only at Petra but also throughout the ancient world.

Because this event ignited Chickee’s interest  in the Divine Feminine for the rest of her life, she has also produced other writings about it.  The following blog post series is one of these.
