Plan on play during airy, communicative Gemini and make sure to watch for opportunities for witty, verbal exchanges! This is a good time to put energy into friendships, to attend meetings, or study something of interest to yourself. Let your curiosity keep you on the move and in the moment. Excerpted from the We'Moon Datebook

This month's Gemini artists are multi-talented - no surprise there! So please enjoy and hopefully you'll have a much better idea about what makes the Gemini mind, heart and fingers tick after reading this post.

I am most certainly influenced by the sign of Gemini when it comes to my creativity as well as my work. Throughout my life, I have found a variety of ways to express my creativity; sewing, stained glass, beading, crocheting, paper making, fabric dying, mosaics... I could go on! Right now my passion is fused glass. The medium is versatile and I love experimenting with new techniques. I'm very logical in work and in play, which is probably why I manage a software support group and program instrumentation for "a living". You'll also notice that the artistic mediums I have chosen are very structured - give a Gemini a pattern and you'll keep her happy for a week!

Those born under the sign of Gemini are thought to be versatile and possess a youthful energy, while at the same time be rational and logical. Their unending quest for knowledge typically means that they dabble in many things, but it also means they can become bored with something quickly. I certainly see these traits when it comes to my creativity.

Harvest Squares Fused Glass Dish

One needs only to look at my studio aka basement craftroom to confirm this. You'll find tools for stained glass and lampworking, yarns and needles for crocheting and knitting, floss for embroidery and cross-stitching, fabrics for sewing and dying, blenders and screens for paper making, and beads and more beads for jewelry making and bead weaving. Oh, and a shelf of books full of tips and techniques for each of these!

One thing you'll notice about all of these endeavors is that they are also structured. One follows a series of steps to get to the end result. I think the straightforward nature of these crafts feeds that logical and rational side of me, while still allowing me to be expressive and create something beautiful.

My current passion is fused glass. I find it exciting and challenging, and there seems to be an endless array of techniques and materials to work with. There's always a bit of exciting anticipation when the firing process is complete and you examine the piece that has been transformed. While the careful process of creation produces consistent results, each piece is unique. Perhaps fused glass will be the creative outlet that will finally satisfy this easily bored Gemini!

Currently I live in the foothills of the Wasatch Mountains in Northern Utah. By day I manage a software support group, program dataloggers, and do some technical writing. The job is challenging, full of diversity, and there's always something new to learn. In my "free time" I enjoy creating my fused glass designs, landscaping, cooking, reading, hiking, biking, skiing... and being "maid" to a 17 year old very spoiled cat! I set up Jester's Baubles as a small, home-based business so I might be able to share my passion for glass and the satisfaction of creating something beautiful with others.

Off the top of my head I think the way the main ways that being a Gemini influences my work are:
- I get bored doing the same thing so I can only make so many of the same things.
- I have lots and lots of different projects on the go.
- I have so many ideas and not enough time to complete them all.
- Crochet is all about having dexterous fingers

Here we are, myself and my other self. We are Gemini and we are torn between us as to what we should make next. We want to learn how to macramé, and how to use the sewing machine because we have so many fantastic ideas! We agree that we enjoy crocheting because it’s fun and it means we can be inventive and unrestrained, not having to follow someone else's patterns and ideas and a BIG plus is that it tends to grow fast so we’re much more inclined to finish our projects. We have about twelve unfinished projects lying around at the moment which isn’t too bad. We have a hunger to learn new techniques, to strive to know more about what we enjoy, skim-reading books and websites learning by osmosis rather than by study. This means we may know how to do part of something and need to make up the rest as we go. Opening shops online and doing the local market has helped force us to complete the creative process. Whatever we make it has to be fun, fun for us to make, fun for someone to use or look at. Boredom and being in a rut are the enemy!

My designs reflect my short attention span, LOL. I am interested in everything that is art and jewelry-related and love to learn all that I can to combine many techniques into one awesome finished piece. My latest endeavor will be a metal clay class - the goal is to combine all kinds of things with polymer clay and original art to create really rocking and original jewelry and multi-media art!

I am a Gemini with a Leo moon who loves to experiment with new art forms, and combine existing art forms into new and unique expressions. My first love is drawing, primarily with markers and colored pencils and incorporating that artwork into one-of-a-kind jewelry pieces, fun gifty items and affordable art reproductions.

Being a mutable astrological sign, I love change and learning new techniques to keep my creations fresh and exciting. Creating pieces that are more three-dimensional was my next step as I took on polymer clay. I can't believe I never tried it before! It allows for more flexibility and adaptability than I ever imagined, allowing me to combine my artistic visions in ever more eclectic and creative ways.

Another area of astrology that I find fascinating is the Chinese Zodiac, and discovering "the animal that hides in your heart" based upon your year of birth. I am a double Fire Horse (gasp!) and my drive and constant need for creativity, expression and energy are definitely reflected in my lunar sign. With respect to that, I will be adding a new line of jewelry items inspired by the Fire Horse and my newest creative expression - metal clay, in which a plain piece of silver (or other metal) clay is shaped then transformed by fire into a shining piece of precious metal beauty. Change and versatility within creative expression is definitely what I live by, both as a Gemini and as a Fire Horse!

New Moon in Scorpio

November 16, 2009 11:44 am PST

"Under the Moon in Scorpio, our path takes us to the roots, deep in our psyche, down where the magma lies. Our concentration can become fierce - even obsessive - and so we need to focus it with care. We can ignore our body or be engulfed in sexuality; get mean or be filled with compassion - it's time now to compost the deadwood of life and garden. The soul born with Moon in Scorpio is intense; she needs time alone, but not to isolate herself." (Excerpted from the We'Moon Datebook)

This month's New Moon line-up of incredibly passionate Scorpionic women is a real treat because I must say the intensity of their vision and stories was quite incredible and inspiring - gotta love that Scorpionic deep, probing insightful persistence and willpower!

I think my work ties into being a Scorpio because I visualize everything before I create it. I am driven to create by unseen forces and I never give up on anything no matter how long it takes to succeed. I don't think I would be creative if I were not a Scorpio. I don't know any other answer than that. I am who I am because I am a Scorpio, I create what I create because I am a Scorpio.

The Traveling Cloths Folk Art Grungy Angel - One of a Kind

As of late I have been going through a lot of changes, I didn't know what direction I wanted to go in regards to creating because I have been creating my whole life and always felt as if something was missing, like I wasn't hitting the mark so to speak, but a few months ago I started hand embroidering, which I love. I felt drawn to it and driven to do it and most recently it has turned into something completely unexpected. I feel as if I am being driven to create folk art made from fabric, (I work with vintage fabric such as table cloths). I have just been bombarded with so many ideas and images of what I should create, its fantastic and I love it and I don't want it to ever stop. An idea will just pop into my head and I have to grab paper and pencil and draw my designs and then I free-hand the designs onto the fabric and it just goes from there. I put a folk art witch piece on Etsy a few days ago and it sold. I was flabbergasted and excited all at the same time. I feel this is a whole new creative venture for me.

Born on Nov 21, this Scorpio artist has fallen victim to some of the more extreme qualities of my astrological signs’ traits, both negative and positive. The path that brought me to discover my new found artistic talent is a direct result of the darker side of some of these traits.

Extreme behavior has ruled my life since I can remember, and when channeled properly, it can be used for great good, or great bad and for many years, I achieved a lot of good. I have several college degrees; I had an executive position, my own home and was engaged to be married. Then the pendulum swung in the other direction and my other extreme took over – namely addiction. This extreme is a tough one to beat and tends to rule all. And it ruled my life at the expense of all others, and I lost everything: the job, the fiancé, the car, and almost my life.

Through a series of events, I was able to stop using drugs, and I managed to clear the fog just a little bit. There I sat, surrounded by the wreckage of what was once a charmed life. Those Scorpio extremes can be ROUGH. I must say that I had never in my life considered myself an artist, nor had I attempted an artistic venture. Not knowing what else to do, I made a decision to purchase some stained glass equipment. Normally costing hundreds of dollars, the equipment was essentially given to me by a stranger for next to nothing. If this stranger only knew how this gift would change my life…….

There I sat, in my freezing cold basement, still reeling from the loss of my previous life. I needed to stay busy and I couldn’t afford supplies or classes, so I just started doing. And what I started doing was amazing - it turned out I had a talent that I never knew existed. Not only did I discover something to keep my mind and hands busy, but my little Scorpio business mind was kicking into action as well - I might actually be able to do something with this! So I quickly turned it from a soul-saving hobby into a business. I got so busy that my brother had to quit his full time job to work with the business and it just continues to grow by leaps and bounds.

Stained Glass Butterfly

Never having considered myself an artist before, every time I make a stained glass piece, I am still amazed at the fact that I produced such a beautiful thing. It comes from a place in my soul and psyche that are yet to be explored – the surface has just been scratched. What I do know, is that art has significantly helped to heal my broken soul. It has filled some of the large holes I have carried around in my soul my whole life and it has brought me peace.

We now support ourselves solely through our art, which is a beautiful way to live. And I have been sober now for over a year. The journey I took into the darkest extremes of my Scorpio sign was the most terrifying experience of my life, but the existential shift in my soul that has resulted from that trip – namely my artwork – makes it worth it. Almost.

I’m certainly attracted to the unusual and the esoteric, so I guess it could be said I’m typical of my sign in that respect. As a child and teenager I had the privilege to know some strange local characters, whom I later realized could be termed ‘Outsider’ artists. Outsider art is a genre of art that has it’s roots in France at the turn of the century. It grew out of ‘Art Brut’, a term coined by French artist Jean Dubuffet, and it has a long history, too long to go into here. There is an esoteric connection to this genre of art that some may call ‘occult’ but then I’m attracted to art that has a sense of the ‘other’ to it. The occult has had some very bad press over the years, so, what does the word occult actually mean? Well the dictionary definitions that I like best describe it as: “characteristic of the mystical” and “that which is beyond ordinary human understanding” ……perfect!

I believe that certain people have an innate understanding, a kind of in-built ability to recognize works of art that are of this nature, and some have the ability to create works that connect us to the wonder and mystery of our world and of the spiritual. It’s not enough to choose magical or mystical themes and then use them in one's art; that in itself will not create ‘magical’ art. Anyone can do that it, it won’t automatically mean that the work created will have this special quality. Just because a painting may contain the image of a unicorn, a faery or Celtic goddess symbols doesn’t mean that it will be magical or have the deeper connection that I’m speaking of. In fact, that would probably have the opposite effect and render the artwork too contrived and false, no more than a pretty picture. What I’m speaking of is a quality that by its very nature is hard to define, that’s why the Scorpio in me is attracted to and resonates with it!

Winged Guardian

I grew up in a mystical place, an ancient city that has an ancient goddess and an equally ancient temple, built over a natural healing hot spring in Bath, England. The temple and spring in Bath is presided over by the goddess Sul or Sulis and you can still visit the temple today, right in the heart of the city. The temple as it exists today, was built by the Romans over the existing Celtic ruin and it was already ancient and well established as a place of worship, a healing and magical centre when the Romans invaded. In fact the Romans amalgamated their own goddess of wisdom and healing with Sulis and the temple became known, and is known today as the temple of Sulis Minerva. It is visited by thousands of tourists each year, but there are still times in the year when it’s quiet and that’s when I visit and make my own offerings to Sul. She is a goddess of healing, prophecy, culture and also conversely a goddess of war and justice. You can still see some of the ancient artifacts that were dug out from the site in modern times, items the local Romans had cast as offerings into the waters with inscriptions on them asking the goddess for revenge and healing. I grew up within this atmosphere, and as any visitor will tell you Bath Has a certain ‘air’ about it due I expect, to the hot waters that constantly flow below us.

Living in Somerset, I’m also very close to other ancient sites such as Glastonbury, Avebury and Stonehenge, so is it any wonder that the magical interests me?! I have been a practicing meditator since I was a teenager, and since I am now approaching fifty-two that is a very long time ago! I firmly believe that meditation and entering into silence, is an invaluable practice in our modern world with all its stresses and craziness. It’s strange to me that we have almost lost our ability to enjoy silence. I’d even go as far as to say that some people seem afraid of it as though silence is a void that they must fill with the sound of their own voices in endless chatter or music and tv! I also believe that my practice of meditation is where I make much of my creative and spiritual connections, not only in the art I make, of which only a small portion is shown on Etsy, but also in many other areas of my life. Of course I create and enjoy art that is fun and meant to be taken and enjoyed in a more light-hearted manner as well, but as a Scorpio I just can’t help looking for the ‘deeper’ meaning!

I’ve always had a need to create art. As a child I loved to draw and even make jewelry! Now I dabble in pottery and painting, but I really love the physicality of metalsmithing. Being a Scorpio definitely affects my art and creativity. Stubborn? Immovable? Never! I love the challenge of setting a difficult stone.

Being a water sign, I am drawn to the water and have always lived on the coast. My hobbies and travels frequently involve water and serve as the inspiration for much of my jewelry collection. I was recently on a kayak trip in Vancouver Island where I created a "Cascading Necklace" that reminds me of the eddies and currents I’d encountered there. It was an amazing trip that really left its impression in my psyche. Living in Seattle, I like to walk along the beach in the winter. We frequently see otters, moon snails, and whales. I can’t take those home, but a piece of turquoise sea glass did make it into my pocket and was the beginning of one of my favorite ring collections - "The Sea Glass Stackable Rings".

Beach Walk Sea Glass Sterling Silver Ring

Being a sensitive Scorpio, my pieces frequently have symbolic sentiment. I wanted to create something for my mother and came up with " The Embrace". The base represents stability, the circle her support and the stone is her strength and clarity. I don’t always include the symbolism in my item descriptions because I want people to have the freedom to see what they want in my art, plus perhaps the secretive Scorpio in me doesn’t want to share it all the time! My partner Todd frequently reminds me…”Scorpioooo!”

Full Moon in Taurus

Full Moon in TaurusNovember 2, 2009 11:14 am PST

The full moon rises at sunset and sets at sunrise. Astrologically, the sun and moon are in opposition (eg. opposite each other in the sky and in opposite signs of the zodiac). She is visible all night long from moonrise to moonset.

The Taurus Moon asks us to discover what nurtures us and how we can grow deeper roots. We can almost feel the mud oozing between our toes, awakening our senses and sensuality, and growing our stubborness. It's time to cultivate our material resources, our homes and our body. (Excerpted from the We'Moon Datebook).

This months featured full moon artists are Bonnie, Sunny and Lacy - doesn't that have a nice ring to it?!

Bonnie Kanavins Hot Pink Chick Temple, PA

My name is Bonnie Kanavins and I am the owner/designer of Hot Pink Chick, where I design and create unique handmade jewelry for everyday wear.

Born April 29th, I am a Taurus through and through. While some (who will remain nameless….DAD) will tell you that my stubborn persistence can be a curse, I’ve always found it to be more of a blessing. When others would give up, I’ve been able to persevere. Slow and steady wins the race.

At work, my Taurean nature takes over. My office and workshop are neat, organized and every item is labeled and in its place. I have a schedule to manage all areas of my life and try not to stray from it so as not to upset the balance. I like to keep a calm, peaceful, laughter-filled environment in my home and scheduling helps to achieve that.

Nature Earrings

Like a true Taurus, I have carefully laid out my plans and goals for the future of my business and will continue striving to reach them, never losing focus, with the dogged determination of the Bull.

Sunny Sunny Day Vintage Chicago, Illinois

I’m very much a Taurus: stubborn and intensely loyal to those I love – and I’m all about the creature comforts. Maybe that’s why I’ve always been involved in creative fields – to feather my nest and a lot of other people’s too. The warmth and comfort and personal style of “home” is what balances the life we lead away from it.

Over the years, a gifted friend has done readings for my husband and me, and our readings aligned very closely to major milestones we experienced. I’ve also had a growing recognition of my intuitive strengths, and I work on being open to that. A few years ago, when I was at a crossroads, I had a very special reading where I learned that my archangel is one of creativity and truth – and his color is yellow. Well, of course it’s yellow! As a kid, I was called Sunny. I feed off the sun, although I’m an earth sign; go figure!

No matter what style your interiors are, adding something old and soulful or mid-century cool always fits right in.

Moon and star salt and pepper

The happy faces on these two make me laugh.

This is the sort of thing I like to hide my secrets in:

Green mini-chest

The Great Dream Book

This book found me at a sale out in the country. People like us probably kept books like this in our bedside tables, back in the day. Oh, and if you dream of gazing at the sun, it mean happiness lies ahead!

Virgo note cards

Whenever I see anything astrological, planetary or sunny, I’m drawn to it. Especially old stationary – maybe because my small but close set of peeps is so important to me. And look at the long mermaid hair on Miss Virgo!

Come on in! Kick off your shoes! Have a seat! Here - have something to eat, and more importantly, what can I get you to drink?

We Taureans love our homes, good food and good drink and we REALLY love to share them with others! It only makes sense to me that I found my niche in handmade housewares that are both practical (another Taurus buzzword) and lovely. If there's anything I love more than a good bottle of wine shared with loved ones gathering in my home, it's another bottle!

Loving dinner parties, nights in, and BYOB restaurants (Taurus, thrifty as always!) made it a natural fit for me to imagine something I loved that I hadn't yet found on the market: Cute, reusable (and earth friendly) wine bags, perfect for toting a bottle to a picnic or giving as a thoughtful, unique host gift when visiting a well-loved friend.

Pinkie Wine Bag/Cozy

I feel my Taurus traits come out in strategy and in art. If I'm in it, I'm in it for the long haul: I'm focused on building my shop slowly, steadily, and relying on the rewards of work that is both well done and patiently developed. Some of my happiest nights are sitting quietly at home, looking at a pile of plain wine bags and dreaming up ways to detail and accentuate them. Practicality keeps dreams in check: I started off with minimal investment by getting my yarn from thrift stores and keeping myself to a strict budget. I'll only let myself expand and buy more materials when I sell what I have (this makes it tough when building an initial inventory, though!). True to my earth sign, I work in mostly earth tones and struggle to make anything vaguely flashier - even when I know they'll sell! Charcoals, browns, and deep reds just resonate with me the strongest!

My work tends to be chunky and sturdy rather than gossamer and delicate - the heavy earth presence in my sign leads me to value things that will last. I also notice a definite trend towards the simple and elegant, another Taurus hallmark.

Although I love the company of others, I can be blissfully happy when lost in my own world - and a crochet needle and ball of yarn can be all it takes to occupy my hands while my mind drifts off. I always keep a project in my purse for when I'm on the train, waiting for appointments, or watching a good football game. It's a perfect match for me - my Taurus work ethic makes it hard to let my hands just sit there!

I can be absolutely bull-headed when a piece just is. not. working. I can't give it up! Unravel. Try again. Unravel. Change yarn color. Try again. Unravel. (repeat ad infinitum) Times like this I'm lucky enough to have a good consultant in my husband - also a Taurus. Since he's fresh to it, his sense of the aesthetic makes it easy for him to cut right to the problem. "It's too boring. You need something right here." Boom. Fixed. (Forgive me for mentioning my husband - I know this piece is about me and my work, but after all, I *am* ruled by Venus!)

Aries Full Moon Artist Spotlight

Full Moon in Aries

October 3, 2009
11:10 pm PDT

Full Moon fulfillment burns with Aries heat and fire this month so take some time to wake up and remember who you truly are, even if it bothers those you work with or love. Tempers, tears and passion run high as we find our independence and our voice.

This month's Full Moon Aries artist is Roberta and Renee (a Libra) from Amanda, Ohio and I'm sure you'll find their story very inspiring in many ways. I must say that I had a very tough time finding Aries artists to feature this month - not sure why, maybe they're all too busy charging full steam ahead changing the world?!

Roberta & Renee

Stratus Silver
Amanda, Ohio

Recycled Twig Bangle Bracelets

Roberta and I (Renee) are co-owners of Stratus Silver Jewelry Co. I am an Aries and Berta is the Libra. We have known each other and worked together at our day jobs for sixteen years, although Stratus Silver did not come about until we 'accidentally' became neighbors out in the middle of nowhere. (We live in the Hocking Hills region of southeastern Ohio.)

I am definitely not an astrology expert, but I know Aries and Libra are a great mix. Berta's air feeds me and my fire moves her. I'm the initiator, innovator and fixer; she picks up whatever comes and runs with it, all while bringing balance to the entire operation. We motivate each other and work better together than any other two people we know. When we're swamped and under pressure, we often work 10-12 hours together in our studio and never miss a beat, including getting families fed, kids to football, client calls and anything else on the agenda. A few words between us is all it takes to get the ball rolling. From there we hum. One picks up where the other leaves off and before we know it, the jobs are done. No worries about tripping over egos here either. We're both well aware of who excels at what and surprise, surprise, our talents are perfect compliments to each other.

Our nature line was born one day when I was bored and said: "Lets do something different. I feel like burning something up." (Are you surprised?) Berta agreed. (She never quashes my spontaneity.) A few hours later, we were both staring at a pound of sterling silver twig castings. Simultaneously we said: "What now?" The twig bangles were my idea. Berta immediately followed with twig earrings and "Can we do other stuff, too? Like leaves maybe?" Yeah. We could do leaves. And flowers and petals and seeds and on and on. We haven't found a limit to what we can do together yet, except perhaps in that linear, non-existent dimension we're in called 'time.'

Queen Size Twig Bangle Bracelets

Our ultimate goal is to grow Stratus Silver to the point where we can provide some jobs for the many people who are out of work in the depressed, very rural area where we live. The folks around here have relied on manufacturing companies for employment for generations. Unfortunately, the area's manufacturers have all moved out of the country or closed because of the economy.

It's also our intent and hope to inspire a sense of appreciation for nature and an attitude of conservation in others through our jewelry. The Wayne National Forest is on our doorstep and we'd like to see it there for generations to come.

Thank you for the opportunity to be seen in your blog and the opportunity for a little self discovery as I thought about your blog interview questions. I hadn't told most of my friends and family about my shop yet (I didn't want to seem like I was selling to them and my confidence was low). I did have the confidence to tell them about the blog interview though and the response was so amazing! It was so nice to hear their thoughts after reading your interview post and to feel their support. It was a great way to show my creative side to my family and friends.

Again thank you for all you do with your blog! It's great for artists to read about other artist's and why they do the things we do. There's a certain kinship there!
