Taking Off the Mask and Understanding Autism

Into the ruby red depths
of my heart I go
where I know
that power and peace
reside here.
Join me,
my fellow cave-dweller
on a journey
into deep space
where the buffalo roams
the eagle flies
the wolf cries.
Where we are safe
in our wild-ness
just be-ing
ourselves.

Beyond the mask, we wear, for protection and safety, who are we?

It’s tiring, isn’t it, to mask up? Literally.

Or, is it?

For those with autism, who may mask daily to survive, the wearing of a face mask can be a relief.

No chance for others to notice we’re not smiling, or not showing Neurotypical responses.

We can hide and be ourselves without fear of judgement.

Now that the Covid masks are starting to come off here in Temecula, Southern California, we are exposed again, yet feeling tired of having to pretend; and put on a face of agreeability, especially as women.

How are you handling the coming off of masks?

Last night I attended my first party without a mask feeling some social pressure to NOT be the only one wearing a mask, so I didn’t.

I put on my party face for a half hour, this time really noticing how much effort it was taking.

Afterwards and in bed that night I still didn’t know how I felt about it. Later, I did. I felt irritated and exhausted.

I’m recovering by writing and painting and channeling with the help of GARNET (the stone) who speaks:

To relax
Go deep
until you hear
the fairies singing,
Shimmering
Fascination
Takes over.

Self Care Comes First

I still remember attending an after-wake gathering surrounded by strangers when all I wanted to do was write and process the death of my father and uncle.

I needed to be alone.
To write poetry.
Channel the dead.
Be quiet.

We need to give ourselves the SPACE we need by setting boundaries with others.

I wish I had been brave enough to announce to all those strangers that I needed to leave and be by myself. But I didn’t. Perhaps I didn’t want to be judged like my father was who many considered to be, ‘weird, alien, off’.

But now I can understand that it was self care I needed in that moment and the only person that could give that to me was myself.

So, BE BRAVE dear soul and ask for what you need to take care of yourself first.

Hugs and Blessings,
Kathy Crabbe
