Spotlight on Sagittarian Artist, Adventurer ~ Claudia LaGuardia Shop: Crafty Earthling Blog: To Bablyon and Back

Throughout my life I have always been the adventurous type who would go for a walk in the forest by herself or save up every extra penny in college while eating beans and rice for months on end in order to make it to Europe for a month during the summer. People always ask how I had the courage to do these things, and whether or not I'm scared of what might happen on my adventures and I tell them that I'm lucky. The truth is that I work hard for things to work out the way I'd like, and I always have a long list of goals to accomplish on my “list of things to do before I die,” from skydiving to eating chocolate covered grasshoppers at a fancy restaurant. I am always working on achieving something and things usually manifest because of this strong, focused intent.

Right now my boyfriend Gregor and I are hitchhiking across the country. He is the photographer and navigator and I have dubbed myself the jeweler, explorer, and philosopher. We sell our wares on street corners and trail heads in order to continue on this epic journey. Today we are in Cortez, Colorado at a The Spruce Tree Coffeehouse where he is nose deep in a book about Ayurveda and I am finishing up my homework for the two online courses I am taking.

What's Your Name Sailor - hemp necklace

I am a Sagittarius and it is kind of funny how well I fit into that category; always looking for new adventures and hungry for the wisdom contained within the tree of life. I am very open minded and am willing to listen to anyone despite our differences. Although I may not agree with someone's opinions I love learning about why they think the way they do and what life experiences may have led them to those conclusions. I am a student of human thought and behavior and try to look at challenges to my way and view of life as reasons to question my own motives. Recently I was introduced to Dr. David Hawkin's “Map of Consciousness” and as it was explained to me, all of us have the ability to rise past our current state on this map and even achieve enlightenment in this lifetime. We can find where we fall on this map by using a pendulum or simply by asking ourselves how we feel about life most of the time and making an estimate of where we fall on the map. One idea which struck me recently was that although it is great to try to climb as high as we can on the ladder of consciousness through meditation, mindfulness, and movement (eg. Yoga or Tai chi) not only for our own benefit, but also for the benefit of the people who may encounter us, it is also important to notice what triggers us to feel shame, desire, apathy, guilt, fear, anger, grief, pride, and any of the other emotions below the 200 level. All of us experience these feelings at some point or another during our lifetimes and it is important to objectively observe what it is that causes us to feel these emotions in order to ride the horse of emotion instead of getting dragged along the ground as it runs away with us trailing behind.

As a jeweler I find that I like using bright colors and making jewelry out of found or bartered items. Throughout our travels I have bartered jewelry, beads, stones, patches and clothing for pieces to make jewelry with. I am often just given things such as old pieces of jewelry that people no longer want or I find treasures like pieces of jade or rocks with holes made by ocean water while walking down the coast. I love taking old pieces and giving them a new life through my jewelry. For instance, while in Morro Bay I was given a necklace made of pieces of abalone shell. The necklace would have been perfect for a mermaid, but was a bit gaudy for my friend so I took it apart and used some of the shells to make a pair of earrings, incorporating pearls to go with the sea-like feel. Each piece of jewelry has a story behind its creation, from the gold findings I received in trade for a strand of amethyst chips at the “Spirit Garden” in Big Sur to the hematite necklace I was given by a friend in Tempe, Arizona, which was promptly taken apart and reconstructed as a pair of earrings and a choker.

Hitchhiking around the country throughout the past eight months has been an incredible experience that has led me to learn more about myself. I am blessed to be able to have this experience. One of the things I have learned throughout this journey is the power of intent and how important it is to have a positive outlook on life. I really believe that if you are in a positive mood you will attract like-minded people and if you are in a bad mood you will likewise attract people with the same mindset. No one wants to pick up an angry hitchhiker, nor should they, and no hitchhiker wants to be picked up by an angry driver. Another thing that I've learned is the power of a smile. Even if someone doesn't pick you up hitchhiking, a smile can do wonders for their day and make them rethink their judgments or even just infect them with love and cause them to smile at the next person they see, restarting the cycle.

Adventures in Aventurine

As far as jewelry goes I'm going to continue making bright, eccentric pieces along with up-cycled treasures. Yesterday I bought some turquoise beads from a shop in Colorado. It excites me how inexpensive turquoise is here as compared to my home back in Maine where we have more amethyst and quartz. I love finding the local stones in each state and passing along those deals to my customers on the other side of the country. I hope to be able to continue to travel for decades to come and collect small treasures to pass on to others throughout my journeys.

Full Moon Triple Scorpio Power

Full Moon in ScorpioApril 28, 2010 5:18 am PDT

The Moon in Scorpio takes us deep down into our psyche, our roots - down where the magma lies. Our concentration can become fierce, even obsessive, so we need to focus it with care. We can ignore our body or be engulfed in sexuality; get mean or be filled with compassion. It's time to compost the deadwood of life and garden. Excerpted from the We'Moon Datebook.

Scorpios are known for their intensity. I don't think I ever fully appreciated that part of my personality until recently. I now view creativity as a way of life rather than simply "something I do." I pursue my work with such a drive and a passion that it sometimes surprises me since otherwise I'm a pretty laid-back person. I never would have thought I was the type to manage my own business, but currently as I try to make my way as a craft artist, I can't imagine being satisfied with anything else. I love the independence and I love that I don't have to be responsible for anyone but myself, although I've worked well in many jobs and will most likely have to continue to do so to supplement my income, I find that I'm much more content working for myself, even if it means more effort on my part.

Wool Blend Capelet with Braided Edge

I also have a characteristically Scorpio fixation with impermanence which has certainly influenced and been influenced by my spirituality. I practice Buddhism primarily in the Tibetan traditions. I named my shop Empty Knits after the Buddhist concept that all beings and phenomena are empty or lacking of a separate existence or in other words, all things are interdependent. My knitting is a significant part of my practice because it works for me like meditation and brings me closer to the point of awareness, understanding and limitless compassion - it's an exercise in interdependence. When I knit, I'm aware of my connection to everything that has brought me to that point - my own history as a craft artist, the generations of knitters in my family, the wool and bamboo that are enabling me to create something new and where my work will go once it's finished. I knit a lot for charity; Afghans for Afghans and Mother Bear Project are two of my favorites. There's nothing quite like knowing that the sock that appears in my hands is going to warm a child on the other side of the world, it's truly magical.

I am a Scorpio born on October 28th. Scorpios are known to be passionate, jealous by nature, deep thinkers, revengeful dreamers, born leaders and creative spirits and I believe my art reflects both my positive and negative Scorpionic traits.

I am most definitely a dreamer with a love of fantasy and far away places. I love to create new things and can always find something new within objects that have been pushed to the side. I want to make them useful again or at least make them stand out above the rest.

I am very in touch with my spiritual side and see the soul in all things - a soul that may be hidden away just wanting to surface. To me vintage items all have a past, some having survived for decades and their vibes draw me to them.

Vintage dolls are my favorite. I look at a vintage doll that is not in the best of shape and I can see that it was well loved at one time. Some dolls have missing hair and some have glazed over eyes. My Scorpionic nature helps me take these lost forgotten souls and make them into something new that stands out again. I look at them with my minds eye and go from there. The eyes are important in a forgotten soul's creation so I give them glowing eyes to show the spirit within from days gone by.

Forgotten Soul Reborn Horror Doll ~ Possessed Polly

I have always loved dolls. They are a reflection of my childhood and the childlike spirit within me. Being born so close to Halloween I also love the darker side of fantasy. Some of my creations can even be morbid, but I work with both the realms of light and of dark - you can't have one without the other. Just as a Scorpio can be jealous and revengeful they can also be loving and passionate.

Creating my Forgotten Soul Dolls is such an inspiration to my everyday life, it's my release and my form of expression. To some it may seem a little crazed or wild but that is the part I love. I do not like being normal, that doesn't inspire me at all.

I’ve been told, beginning around the age of ten, that I was a very old soul. You can’t get more Scorpio than those wise words. Those comments and kind gestures have always ignited my imagination and determination to simply follow my intuition since it knew the way.

From those passions and deeply rooted desires a real love and respect for all things natural came to be. Give me some lovely herbs, oils, stones or a few pretty feathers and beauty will emerge. Each creation and craft is my own personal phoenix and nurtured from the beginning to the end.

Nag Champa Soy Candle

Not long ago I dreamt of an eagle. Its massive hand-like talons opened up my window to come in and for a moment I was fearful, but then I realized that this is what I’ve been waiting for - my team was complete: the scorpion, phoenix and massive dreamy eagle friend. Together we can make this world a better place, one bar of soap at a time.

Full Moon in Libra Divinely Inspired, Holistic Healing Jeweler, Sophie D.

Full Moon in LibraMarch 29, 2010 5:25 pm PDT

During the Moon in Libra, relationships become our source of growth with our beloveds or in our relationship to beauty, to friendship, to our creative muse, to fairness and equality. While you need to avoid taking responsibility for everyone's happiness, you can be a real leader toward dynamic cooperation and peaceful co-existence. Excerpted from the We'Moon Datebook.

This month's one and only Full Moon artist is a splendiferous combination of many lovely Libran traits, she is not only a crystal healing, lightworking, soulful, artistic creator, but a Reiki practitioner, holistic healer, angel seer, and breast cancer survivor. I hope you enjoy her inspirational story.

I am a Libra, born on September 25 many moons ago. Libras love beauty, harmony, and balance. Appropriately enough, my purpose in life is to create beauty, harmony, and light. I am doing this by being a Reiki practitioner and by creating jewelry for your body and soul.

My Reiki practice helps to balance and harmonize your body, your mind, your emotions, and your spirit. My intention for my jewelry is to bring more love, more light, more peace, more beauty, and more of your heart's desires into your life. I joyfully infuse all of my creations with love, healing energy ? including Reiki energy ? and prayers.

A very UN-scientific survey among my friends and fans shows that the words most used to describe my creations are: elegant, harmonious, graceful, beautiful… all typical Libran traits! I call my style “neo-classical.” A Libra is too well-balanced to be avant-garde, though I do admire the talent and creativity of those at the artistic forefront.

I was born in South Vietnam and grew up there. After I got my French Baccalaureate degree, I moved to the United States to further my education. Upon getting my master’s degree, I worked as a computer programmer, and then as a web site designer and producer. I have since left the corporate world about five years ago to devote myself to Reiki and jewelry design.

While I was a technical person, and my Libran artistic tendencies were dormant back then, I had noticed long ago that I made people feel better by my presence alone. I found out recently that this is said of many Librans: "They always make you feel better for having been with them."

Kitty Come Here Earrings

My interest in holistic healing started about fifteen years ago, when a beloved cat got seriously sick and modern medicine could not help him. I studied herbs, homeopathy, and crystals. I "discovered" Reiki in 2001, and was attuned to the first level of Reiki in March 2002.

A week after that first attunement, a murder suicide took place in my neighborhood. I was totally freaked out by this event, and after a few sleepless nights I called my Reiki teacher, asking for help. She told me to visualize angels surrounding me and my house with the golden light of grace. At that time I was sitting next to a window, and I happened to look out at the golden light of the setting sun streaming in through the window.

Opalescence Necklace

THAT was the moment I first realized that angels really do exist, and that there was a whole world my physical eyes could not see. That experience was the beginning of my spiritual awakening, and marked the beginning of my personal healing journey.

Reiki also unleashed my Libran creativity and artistic talents, and I started making suncatchers and jewelry out of beads and healing stones. The act of making jewelry is for me a form of meditation and prayer. It helps me stay balanced and fulfills my Libran need for peace and harmony.

Essence of a Woman Earrings

I found this tidbit on a web site: “Librans are sensitive to the needs of others and have the gift, sometimes to an almost psychic extent, of understanding the emotional needs of their companions...” Well, in my Reiki practice, I offer intuitively designed and one-of-a-kind Reiki jewelry. If you choose a Reiki session, I will create after that session, under your guidance’s direction, a one-of-a-kind necklace or bracelet using semi-precious stones, Swarovski crystals, sterling silver, glass beads and/or gold accents. I then charge this jewelry with love, healing energy, and prayers, to assist you in holding the energetic balance that you received during your Reiki session.

The designs I offer in my Etsy store are also charged with healing energy, love, and prayers, even when they do not contain semi-precious healing stones, since anything can be filled with good energy! While they are usually not designed with a person in mind, I know that they will find the right owners, and will bring to their owners more peace, more divine grace, more joy!

In 2007 I got another opportunity to evolve spiritually: breast cancer. This traumatic experience helped me to further open my heart, to become stronger as a person, to enjoy life more, and to be grateful. This has inspired me to create a line of inspirational necklaces, such as the ones featured in this post.

Full Moon in Gemini Artists

Full Moon in Gemini

Plan on play during airy, communicative Gemini and make sure to watch for opportunities for witty, verbal exchanges! This is a good time to put energy into friendships, to attend meetings, or study something of interest to yourself. Let your curiosity keep you on the move and in the moment. Excerpted from the We'Moon Datebook

This month's Gemini artists are multi-talented - no surprise there! So please enjoy and hopefully you'll have a much better idea about what makes the Gemini mind, heart and fingers tick after reading this post.

I am most certainly influenced by the sign of Gemini when it comes to my creativity as well as my work. Throughout my life, I have found a variety of ways to express my creativity; sewing, stained glass, beading, crocheting, paper making, fabric dying, mosaics... I could go on! Right now my passion is fused glass. The medium is versatile and I love experimenting with new techniques. I'm very logical in work and in play, which is probably why I manage a software support group and program instrumentation for "a living". You'll also notice that the artistic mediums I have chosen are very structured - give a Gemini a pattern and you'll keep her happy for a week!

Those born under the sign of Gemini are thought to be versatile and possess a youthful energy, while at the same time be rational and logical. Their unending quest for knowledge typically means that they dabble in many things, but it also means they can become bored with something quickly. I certainly see these traits when it comes to my creativity.

Harvest Squares Fused Glass Dish

One needs only to look at my studio aka basement craftroom to confirm this. You'll find tools for stained glass and lampworking, yarns and needles for crocheting and knitting, floss for embroidery and cross-stitching, fabrics for sewing and dying, blenders and screens for paper making, and beads and more beads for jewelry making and bead weaving. Oh, and a shelf of books full of tips and techniques for each of these!

One thing you'll notice about all of these endeavors is that they are also structured. One follows a series of steps to get to the end result. I think the straightforward nature of these crafts feeds that logical and rational side of me, while still allowing me to be expressive and create something beautiful.

My current passion is fused glass. I find it exciting and challenging, and there seems to be an endless array of techniques and materials to work with. There's always a bit of exciting anticipation when the firing process is complete and you examine the piece that has been transformed. While the careful process of creation produces consistent results, each piece is unique. Perhaps fused glass will be the creative outlet that will finally satisfy this easily bored Gemini!

Currently I live in the foothills of the Wasatch Mountains in Northern Utah. By day I manage a software support group, program dataloggers, and do some technical writing. The job is challenging, full of diversity, and there's always something new to learn. In my "free time" I enjoy creating my fused glass designs, landscaping, cooking, reading, hiking, biking, skiing... and being "maid" to a 17 year old very spoiled cat! I set up Jester's Baubles as a small, home-based business so I might be able to share my passion for glass and the satisfaction of creating something beautiful with others.

Off the top of my head I think the way the main ways that being a Gemini influences my work are:
- I get bored doing the same thing so I can only make so many of the same things.
- I have lots and lots of different projects on the go.
- I have so many ideas and not enough time to complete them all.
- Crochet is all about having dexterous fingers

Here we are, myself and my other self. We are Gemini and we are torn between us as to what we should make next. We want to learn how to macramé, and how to use the sewing machine because we have so many fantastic ideas! We agree that we enjoy crocheting because it’s fun and it means we can be inventive and unrestrained, not having to follow someone else's patterns and ideas and a BIG plus is that it tends to grow fast so we’re much more inclined to finish our projects. We have about twelve unfinished projects lying around at the moment which isn’t too bad. We have a hunger to learn new techniques, to strive to know more about what we enjoy, skim-reading books and websites learning by osmosis rather than by study. This means we may know how to do part of something and need to make up the rest as we go. Opening shops online and doing the local market has helped force us to complete the creative process. Whatever we make it has to be fun, fun for us to make, fun for someone to use or look at. Boredom and being in a rut are the enemy!

My designs reflect my short attention span, LOL. I am interested in everything that is art and jewelry-related and love to learn all that I can to combine many techniques into one awesome finished piece. My latest endeavor will be a metal clay class - the goal is to combine all kinds of things with polymer clay and original art to create really rocking and original jewelry and multi-media art!

I am a Gemini with a Leo moon who loves to experiment with new art forms, and combine existing art forms into new and unique expressions. My first love is drawing, primarily with markers and colored pencils and incorporating that artwork into one-of-a-kind jewelry pieces, fun gifty items and affordable art reproductions.

Being a mutable astrological sign, I love change and learning new techniques to keep my creations fresh and exciting. Creating pieces that are more three-dimensional was my next step as I took on polymer clay. I can't believe I never tried it before! It allows for more flexibility and adaptability than I ever imagined, allowing me to combine my artistic visions in ever more eclectic and creative ways.

Another area of astrology that I find fascinating is the Chinese Zodiac, and discovering "the animal that hides in your heart" based upon your year of birth. I am a double Fire Horse (gasp!) and my drive and constant need for creativity, expression and energy are definitely reflected in my lunar sign. With respect to that, I will be adding a new line of jewelry items inspired by the Fire Horse and my newest creative expression - metal clay, in which a plain piece of silver (or other metal) clay is shaped then transformed by fire into a shining piece of precious metal beauty. Change and versatility within creative expression is definitely what I live by, both as a Gemini and as a Fire Horse!

Full Moon in Taurus

Full Moon in TaurusNovember 2, 2009 11:14 am PST

The full moon rises at sunset and sets at sunrise. Astrologically, the sun and moon are in opposition (eg. opposite each other in the sky and in opposite signs of the zodiac). She is visible all night long from moonrise to moonset.

The Taurus Moon asks us to discover what nurtures us and how we can grow deeper roots. We can almost feel the mud oozing between our toes, awakening our senses and sensuality, and growing our stubborness. It's time to cultivate our material resources, our homes and our body. (Excerpted from the We'Moon Datebook).

This months featured full moon artists are Bonnie, Sunny and Lacy - doesn't that have a nice ring to it?!

Bonnie Kanavins Hot Pink Chick Temple, PA

My name is Bonnie Kanavins and I am the owner/designer of Hot Pink Chick, where I design and create unique handmade jewelry for everyday wear.

Born April 29th, I am a Taurus through and through. While some (who will remain nameless….DAD) will tell you that my stubborn persistence can be a curse, I’ve always found it to be more of a blessing. When others would give up, I’ve been able to persevere. Slow and steady wins the race.

At work, my Taurean nature takes over. My office and workshop are neat, organized and every item is labeled and in its place. I have a schedule to manage all areas of my life and try not to stray from it so as not to upset the balance. I like to keep a calm, peaceful, laughter-filled environment in my home and scheduling helps to achieve that.

Nature Earrings

Like a true Taurus, I have carefully laid out my plans and goals for the future of my business and will continue striving to reach them, never losing focus, with the dogged determination of the Bull.

Sunny Sunny Day Vintage Chicago, Illinois

I’m very much a Taurus: stubborn and intensely loyal to those I love – and I’m all about the creature comforts. Maybe that’s why I’ve always been involved in creative fields – to feather my nest and a lot of other people’s too. The warmth and comfort and personal style of “home” is what balances the life we lead away from it.

Over the years, a gifted friend has done readings for my husband and me, and our readings aligned very closely to major milestones we experienced. I’ve also had a growing recognition of my intuitive strengths, and I work on being open to that. A few years ago, when I was at a crossroads, I had a very special reading where I learned that my archangel is one of creativity and truth – and his color is yellow. Well, of course it’s yellow! As a kid, I was called Sunny. I feed off the sun, although I’m an earth sign; go figure!

No matter what style your interiors are, adding something old and soulful or mid-century cool always fits right in.

Moon and star salt and pepper

The happy faces on these two make me laugh.

This is the sort of thing I like to hide my secrets in:

Green mini-chest

The Great Dream Book

This book found me at a sale out in the country. People like us probably kept books like this in our bedside tables, back in the day. Oh, and if you dream of gazing at the sun, it mean happiness lies ahead!

Virgo note cards

Whenever I see anything astrological, planetary or sunny, I’m drawn to it. Especially old stationary – maybe because my small but close set of peeps is so important to me. And look at the long mermaid hair on Miss Virgo!

Lacy Campbell

Come on in! Kick off your shoes! Have a seat! Here - have something to eat, and more importantly, what can I get you to drink?

We Taureans love our homes, good food and good drink and we REALLY love to share them with others! It only makes sense to me that I found my niche in handmade housewares that are both practical (another Taurus buzzword) and lovely. If there's anything I love more than a good bottle of wine shared with loved ones gathering in my home, it's another bottle!

Loving dinner parties, nights in, and BYOB restaurants (Taurus, thrifty as always!) made it a natural fit for me to imagine something I loved that I hadn't yet found on the market: Cute, reusable (and earth friendly) wine bags, perfect for toting a bottle to a picnic or giving as a thoughtful, unique host gift when visiting a well-loved friend.

Pinkie Wine Bag/Cozy

I feel my Taurus traits come out in strategy and in art. If I'm in it, I'm in it for the long haul: I'm focused on building my shop slowly, steadily, and relying on the rewards of work that is both well done and patiently developed. Some of my happiest nights are sitting quietly at home, looking at a pile of plain wine bags and dreaming up ways to detail and accentuate them. Practicality keeps dreams in check: I started off with minimal investment by getting my yarn from thrift stores and keeping myself to a strict budget. I'll only let myself expand and buy more materials when I sell what I have (this makes it tough when building an initial inventory, though!). True to my earth sign, I work in mostly earth tones and struggle to make anything vaguely flashier - even when I know they'll sell! Charcoals, browns, and deep reds just resonate with me the strongest!

My work tends to be chunky and sturdy rather than gossamer and delicate - the heavy earth presence in my sign leads me to value things that will last. I also notice a definite trend towards the simple and elegant, another Taurus hallmark.

Although I love the company of others, I can be blissfully happy when lost in my own world - and a crochet needle and ball of yarn can be all it takes to occupy my hands while my mind drifts off. I always keep a project in my purse for when I'm on the train, waiting for appointments, or watching a good football game. It's a perfect match for me - my Taurus work ethic makes it hard to let my hands just sit there!

I can be absolutely bull-headed when a piece just is. not. working. I can't give it up! Unravel. Try again. Unravel. Change yarn color. Try again. Unravel. (repeat ad infinitum) Times like this I'm lucky enough to have a good consultant in my husband - also a Taurus. Since he's fresh to it, his sense of the aesthetic makes it easy for him to cut right to the problem. "It's too boring. You need something right here." Boom. Fixed. (Forgive me for mentioning my husband - I know this piece is about me and my work, but after all, I *am* ruled by Venus!)
